The Power of the Disciplined Mind: A Reflection on Hanuman Jayanti

From satsangs with Pt. Umadutt Maharaj, SWAHA Bhakti Jyoti Mandali

In the journey of life, success is not shaped by external forces but by the condition and power of our own minds. The Bhagavad Gita (Chapter 6, Verse 5) affirms this truth, teaching us that elevation and degradation come from within; we are our own best friends or worst enemies, depending on how we govern our minds. This principle of self-mastery and internal strength serves as a guiding light for those navigating the complexities of existence with grace and determination.

As we celebrate Hanuman Jayanti, we are reminded of the profound significance of mental strength, epitomised by the venerable Shree Hanumanji. Renowned for his unwavering devotion and unparalleled prowess, he is the embodiment of the disciplined mind—fully absorbed in the divine love of Shree Raam. His life illustrates the pinnacle of both spiritual and worldly success, attainable through mental fortitude, devotion and divine contemplation.

The Patanjali Yoga Sutras categorise the mind into five states: the scattered (kshiptam), the dull (mudham), the distracted (vikshiptam), the concentrated (ekaagra) and the controlled (niruddha). These states are symbolised by Panchmukhi Hanuman—Shree Hanuman with five faces, each representing a different aspect of mental mastery. This framework provides a roadmap for our journey toward mental discipline, encouraging a transition from distraction to unwavering focus and control.

In the Ramayan, Hanumanji’s every action exemplifies the power of the disciplined mind. Whether flying across the ocean, confronting formidable demons or locating Sita Maataa in Lanka, he never faltered. His mind remained steadfast, his focus resolute—always centred on his divine mission to serve Shree Raam. His life teaches us that unseen challenges will arise, but with mental strength, faith and devotion, we can overcome every obstacle. Like a tortoise withdrawing into its protective shell, the disciplined mind becomes the greatest ally, shielding us from distractions and adversities.

The pathway to this elevated state of being is devotion (bhakti), the very essence of Hanumanji’s existence. Shree Raam declares the virtue of satsang—the association with the virtuous—as the foundational step in the devotee’s journey. In the company of the good and the Godly, the mind finds its true purpose and strength, glorifying the Divine and attaining unparalleled peace. A well-known bhajan by Brahmananda urges us to stabilise the mind, seek the protective shelter of the Lord and allow the nectar of devotion to flow within. When we open the temple of our minds and hearts, we invite the Lord to dwell within, transforming His presence into an armour against life’s trials.

In this fleeting and transient world, we often find ourselves turning inward—especially in times of adversity. It is within this sacred inner space that we discover the eternal truth: the Lord alone is permanent. Shree Hanuman’s unwavering focus on Shree Raam earned him divine success in all his endeavours. By worshipping Hanuman Baba, we too can fortify our minds, transcend obstacles and fulfil our duties with excellence.

As we observe Hanuman Jayanti, let us make a solemn vow to strengthen our minds through devotion, discipline and faith. Through the constant remembrance of the Lord, chanting His Name, and performing our duties with dedication, we will find strength, peace and purpose. May we stabilize our minds, permit the light of the Divine to guide us and walk in the footsteps of Hanumanji—steadfast, focused and devoted. With His Name in our hearts and minds, every obstacle can be transcended, and every challenge transformed into an opportunity for spiritual growth.
