The Power of Mahaa Mrityunjai Mantra

shivaOne of the many names of Bhagavan Shiva is Mrityunjai and one of the mantras dedicated to Him as such is the Mahaa Mrityunjai Mantra. According to Shiva Mahaa Puraana, this mantra is one of the five mantras given by Lord Shiva at the time of creation. It is also found in the Rig Veda where it is attributed to Sage Vasistha.

It is a mantra that has many names. It is called the Rudra mantra, referring to the furious aspect of Shiva; the Trayambakam mantra, alluding to Shiva’s three eyes and it is sometimes known as the Mrita-Sanjivini mantra because of its life-restoring characteristics. The Mahaa Mrityunjai mantra is hailed by the sages as the heart of the Vedas. Along with the Gayatri mantra it holds the highest place among the many mantras for contemplation and meditation.

As the name suggests, ‘mrityu’ means ‘death’ while ‘jai’ means ‘victory’. Thus, Mrityunjai means victory over death. This mantra serves as a great benefit to all of mankind. It seeks the protective help of Lord Shiva against difficulties, accidents, illnesses and untimely death. Because of its magnanimous power in effecting various forms of healing, restoration and protection, many recipes have been formulated for its use.

Benefits of Mrityunjai Mantra

Proper recitation of Mahaa Mrityunjai mantra rejuvenates the body, bestows health, wealth, long life, peace, prosperity and contentment. The mantra can be recited when taking medications, for it prepares the body and mind to make the best use of it. Chanting of this mantra generates divine vibrations that ward off all negativities that thwart general uplift. It wards off negative forces and creates a powerful, protective armour that shields the practitioner from any misfortune. It has that power to bestow longevity and cure diseases, even those diagnosed as incurable by doctors.

Additionally, it destroys sorrow and poverty and fulfils one’s legitimate desires. By regular chanting of this mantra, difficult situations are overcome. Translation:
I humbly bow to the Three-Eyed Lord of Auspiciousness, whose sweet fragrance is ever-present and who sustains the world. O Lord, please protect me from untimely death and release me from the bondage of this never-ending cycle of birth and death.
