From New Year’s service with the Paramacharya of SWAHA, H.H. Pundit Hardeo Persad
In the vast expanse of life, where challenges abound, the metaphor of the chariot emerges as a guiding light, revealing the path to virtuous qualities that can empower us to navigate the pathways of existence.
In order to thrive in today’s world, it necessitates the cultivation of certain qualities within ourselves. While many may pray for divine intervention, the ancient wisdom echoes, “God helps those who help themselves,” reminding us that the power to transform lies within each individual.
The journey within, akin to uncovering a flame hidden beneath a bushel, requires introspection and a deliberate effort to remove the layers that obscure our inherent qualities. Just as in the Ramaayan, where Shree Raam likens these virtues to a chariot, we must craft our own chariot of virtues, steering it through the battlefield of life.
The wheels of the chariot symbolise heroism, fortitude as well as patience and resilience. True valour, as elucidated by Shree Raam, is the conquest of one’s nature, an internal battle that requires introspection to discern strengths and weaknesses. Just as weeds can stifle the growth of positive qualities, daily introspection becomes the tool to uproot negativity and allow virtue to flourish.
The chariot’s banner and ensign signify good conduct and truth, emphasising the impact our actions and behaviour have on others. By inculcating virtues, we not only overcome obstacles but also set examples for others.
Four horses pull the chariot, representing physical strength, self-restraint, wisdom and the desire to do good. Balancing these forces with reins of forgiveness, compassion and equanimity, we navigate the complexities of life without giving in to hatred or negativity.
Devotion and faith serve as the charioteer, leading the way through surrender to the divine. The shield of spiritual dispassion guards against the external influences that may disrupt our inner balance. The sword of contentment, the battleaxe of charitable works, and the sharp spear of intellect prepare us for any challenges that may lie ahead.
The impenetrable armour of worshipping genuine holy ones completes the chariot, providing protection against all adversities. In this state, as Shree Raam explains, there isn’t a situation in life that cannot be handled with grace.
In conclusion, the chariot serves as a metaphorical vehicle for navigating life’s challenges with virtuous qualities. By consciously crafting and steering this chariot, we embark on a journey towards self-discovery, resilience and harmonious existence. The inner transformation facilitated by these virtues becomes the key to thriving and advancing towards that state of spiritual union with the divine. .
