“I want to break Brian Lara’s Record,” claims the young form three student of Swaha Hindu College, Amrit Subash Kistow. Amrit was born on the 3rd of February, 1999 in the rural community of Plum Mitan. Growing up as a child, he looked on at his father, Mr. Subash Kistow, who also played the sport of cricket. Astonishingly, young Kistow never indulged in the sport. However, while watching his father play it, his passion for cricket began to grow.
Three years ago, at Plum Mitan Presbyterian Primary School, he ventured into the sport. With ease, he made it into the school’s team. Kistow played in the National Primary School League, and the team placed in the semi-finals. Then in 2011 he was selected for the National Primary School Under-13 Tour to Barbados. Afterwards, Amrit successfully passed his SEA exams for Swaha Hindu College. In Form One he was immediately selected to play for the under 16 team and under 19 senior team, for both of which he was the captain. That year the team won the under 19 North Eastern District Secondary School League.
In the year 2012, he entered the Zonal under 13 for the Northeast region where he was again the captain of the team. Later that year he also played in the Zonal under 15 for the Northeast region. In 2013, the young sportsman played in the Zonal under 15 and under 17 for the Northeast region where he was the Vice Captain of his teams.
Later that year in July, young Kistow was selected for the Trinidad and Tobago under 15 Tour to Jamaica. He described the experienced as a learning experience and lots of fun. He was also selected for the West Indies Performance Training Camp in Antigua. He was elated to meet three West Indies players, Andy Roberts, Rawl Lewis and Vivian Richards. Amrit described the experience at Antigua as very beneficial and valuable to his career as a cricketer. This was due to the intense training he received and the knowledge he gained while working with coaches from different countries. Additionally, young Kistow was also happy to have made new friends throughout the Caribbean. On the 14th of November to the 6th of December, 2013 the sports star will be attending the Tour to Australia Tri-Nation (between India and Australia) West Indies under 16 Trinidad and Tobago team. He will be playing as a right-hand, middle-order stylish batsman and a right-hand, aggressive, open fast bowler.
Amrit Kistow aspires to be the future opening fast bowler of the Trinidad and Tobago team and the West Indies team, as well as the middle order batsman. His dream is to break the highest score by an individual in Test cricket: 400 not out; a record which is currently held by our very own Brian Lara.
Amrit Kistow is a role model for students who wish to pursue a sporting career in cricket. He has been described by teachers as a fun-loving character who is well behaved, polite, respectful and pleasant. In addition, he is also a school-spirited individual who is very participative in class. His Physical Education teacher/coach, Mr. Malcolm Ramlogan, stated that Amrit is a joy to teach, and he is always eager to participate in class. He also confirmed that as his coach, he is a magnificent bowler, technically gifted and possesses a natural ability to play sports. Mr, Ramlogan also added: “His work ethic is truly admirable, better than lots of children his age. I’m extremely happy to have him playing for our school’s team rather than against us and I won’t be surprised if he makes it to the West Indies Cricket team.” Amrit Kistow is without doubt a shining beacon of light and he promises to make a difference in the sports arena of cricket for Trinidad and Tobago and the West Indies.
