From a satsang with Pt. Umadutt Maharaj, Spiritual Leader, SWAHA Bhakti Jyoti Mandali
As we venture on the journey of a new year, let us reflect on the power and strength of the mind, for without mental discipline, we cannot successfully traverse the pathways of life. The scriptures reveal that the mind exists in five states: the raving mind (kshiptam), the forgetful mind (mudham), the oscillating mind (vikshiptam), the restrained mind (ekaagra) and the one-pointed mind (niruddha). These states are beautifully symbolised by Panchmukhi Hanuman— Shree Hanuman with five faces, each representing a different aspect of mental mastery.
In the Ramaayan, Hanumanji, the embodiment of devotion and mental strength, demonstrates the power of the focused and disciplined mind. Whether flying over the vast ocean or facing demonic forces intent on stopping him, he never faltered. His eyes were always set on his goal—the divine mission of serving Shree Raam. Through his unwavering determination and strength, he overcame every hurdle.
In our own lives, unseen challenges can arise—forces that seek to deter us from our path. It is here that the disciplined mind, like a tortoise withdrawing into its protective shell, becomes our greatest ally. By restraining the mind and remaining focused on the goal, we can transcend all difficulties. Hanuman Baba teaches us that with mental strength, unwavering devotion and faith in the Divine, we can survive and thrive through any circumstance.
The Patanjali Yoga Sutras further guide us to transform the mind: from chaos and oscillation to restraint and one-pointed focus. This year, let us resolve to strengthen our minds through devotion (bhakti), for it is through this pathway that we will find the greatest remedy to life’s trials. Shree Raam explained that the first step of devotion is satsang—association with good people who inspire us to worship and glorify the Divine Name. In the company of such souls, we find the key to happiness and spiritual advancement.
As a bhajan by Brahmananda reminds us, we must stabilise the mind, seek the protective shelter of the Lord, and allow the nectar of devotion to flow within. By opening the temple of our minds and hearts, we invite the Lord to dwell within, and His presence becomes our armour in the face of life’s challenges.
In this fleeting and transient world, we are often forced to turn inward—especially in times of adversity. Yet, it is within that sacred inner space that we discover the eternal truth: the Lord alone is permanent. Shree Hanuman’s unwavering focus on Shree Raam, his Master, earned him divine success in all his endeavours. By worshipping Hanuman Baba, the disciplined and devoted mind, we too can strengthen our resolve, transcend obstacles and fulfil our duties with excellence.
Let us begin this year with a promise to raise the quality of our lives spiritually. Through constant remembrance of the Lord, chanting His Name and performing our duties with devotion, we will find strength, peace and purpose. May we stabilise our minds, allow the light of the Divine to guide us and walk in the footsteps of Hanumanji—steadfast, focused and devoted.
In this new year, let us seek the invaluable gem of the Lord’s presence, for with His Name in our hearts and minds, every obstacle can be transcended.
