THE SWAHA Organisation of Trinidad and Tobago recently facilitated an exchange programme with the Delhi Public School, RK Puram, of New Delhi, India.
The group of 15 students with their teachers under the leadership of Dr.Asha Lata Pandey and Mohammed Hamid Khanhad a wonderful time visiting several historical sites and schools in TT. They also paid a courtesy call to the President George Maxwell Richards.
The students also visited the Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Cultural Cooperation (MGICC) where the Director, M M Sharma, held a function in their honour to showcase TT’s culture and talent. Students of the MGICC performed a chutney dance, sang songs and other cultural items to music from India.
The visiting students also performed at the MGICC. Leader of the group, Dr Pandey, said she was amazed that students from this part of the world could pronounce the Hindi words so fluently
“It is very nice to see that the Indian culture is alive outside of India,” she said
Indian High Commissioner Malay Mishra welcomed the students to Trinidad and Tobago and told them this country has the longest diaspora of 165 years of people from India. The High Commissioner also pointed out that the prosperity of Trinidad and Tobago is the result of the hard work of their forefathers.
Mishra said that the people of this country preserve every knowledge and culture as part of their national heritage.
