December 11th, 2018 marks the birth anniversary of the Shankaracharya of SWAHA, the late Pt. Hari Prasad. The Shankarcharya influenced numerous lives as he was respected and revered worldwide for his spirituality, devotion and foresight. In reminiscing on this exemplary leader of Sanaatan Dharma, we honour his philosophy of life through his words:
“Although the challenges will always exist and hindrances will always be placed in our path, our Scriptures urge us not to give up.”
“Have total faith in God and don’t shun your duty. Develop stability of mind and believe in our Scriptures. We must continue to maintain our dharma and live a simple life at His feet.”
“Consuming the right food, meditating, praying and exercising are useful ingredients in the quest for a long and fruitful life.”
“Do your best to enlighten your children, raise them with care and set the right examples. Pass on the right knowledge to them and they will listen to you.”
The Shankarachaya lived and worked in the service of others throughout his life. An embodiment of self-sacrifice, he was considered an ideal husband, father and Guru by his family and chelas. During his 65 years as a practising pundit, the Shankaracharya initiated thousands of devotees from around the world. His spiritual advice was sought by national leaders, scholars and spiritual persons. He made himself available to all without fear or favour, and irrespective of creed, race or social status. He understood that enlightened ritualism and clear knowledge of the philosophy of Sanataan Dharma were needed in modern times.
Shankaracharyaji always reinforced the value of education in self-development. He also highlighted the value and importance of family life. Not only was he physically strong, but on numerous occasions he demonstrated internal strength when confronted with adversity or criticism. He constantly advised his devotees to have faith in God, develop stability of mind and believe in our Scriptures. He always said that God has blessed us with everything that we need. Therefore, we must continue to maintain dharma and live a simple life at the feet of God. Once we perform self-sacrifice, stay true to our principles and have compassion for those around us, his name will be forever revered.
The father of Swaha International, founded in 1993, the Shankaracharya was able to train and develop as pundits his six sons, son-in-law, grandsons, grandson-in-law and many other pundits in Trinidad and Tobago. Today, they nurture the flame of Swaha at home and abroad, carrying on his tremendous spiritual legacy.
The Shankaracharya’s life was his message. It is an eternal message that nourishes the flame of SWAHA. It continues to shed light upon all, bringing us nearer to true enlightenment.
