Today I enjoy the success of my hard work… how did I achieve this?
It is no easy task. As they say nothing good comes easy. You need to be smart and creative in how you plan, organize and execute the plan of action to approach any exam. You will need to include time on your weekly planner for:
- Homework assignments
- On-going working assignments (drills)
- New material covered in each subject
- General revision for exams or revision of material already covered.
When you have a plan it helps you to prioritize things that are more important. Focus on weaker areas, something we shy away from sometimes. As a result you will produce better overall results. Do not procrastinate! Something we do well, because we look to do things that are less demanding as it is easier. Just get it done! Do not allow yourself to feel that this is a chore but challenge yourself to reach your limit.
The key in any given plan is to revise regularly. Have a study area called ‘your corner’, and most importantly ensure that your parents are part of your plan so that you are on track. I was lucky to have my mum to guide me in Mathematics and my dad in Language Arts. I must also say special thanks to Mrs. Wahida Mohammed Narine who was my mentor throughout primary school. They were able to correct my mistakes and assist me with my challenges when things became difficult; at the same time they made learning easier and exciting
I must say that I enjoyed my school, San Fernando TML Primary School, a school with good discipline and a dedicated staff. The teachers and past SEA students motivated us to propel forward to achieve our optimum. My teacher challenged me, especially in the area of Mathematics. My friends and I formed study groups since Standard 3, where we used our spare time to revise and assist each other. It was never about competition but about ensuring that everyone one achieved success.
It was always my ambition to pass for Naparima College. Making this happen required dedication, determination and believing in myself. Most important is having faith in God.
A major aspect of my growth has been my involvement in our place of worship, the Gyaan Deepak Kirtan Mandali. My revered guru, Paramacharya Pt. Hardeo Persad, has been instrumental in motivating me through his discourses which have become life lessons. Guruji’s famous quote is: “Obstacles are what you see when you take your eyes of your goal.” I try to keep my eyes on my goal. Thank you, Guruji.
Finally, you must have a good balance. I played football, cricket, took part in Ramleela, Swaha junior quiz, Sanfest and of course, my favourite, playing tabla. I attended every function, watched a little TV and played video games. Give yourself a reward for your hard work as you progress through your journey. Of course, you cannot be successful in your studies by playing games and watching a lot of television.
The clear message is that GOOD ORGANIZATION, HARD WORK, DEDICATION, EFFORT and GREAT PARENTING is the key to being a successful student. You have to want success to achieve it. All the best in you studies. Go for it! Remember the saying: “If YOU fail to prepare, prepare to fail.”
