A Prescription for Spiritual Fulfilment

We are all seeking better health, a life filled with more happiness and spiritual fulfilment. How will this come about? Using the analogy of a doctor and patient in the medical field, if I am not well and I’m seeking better health, I pay a visit to the doctor. He checks me, he gives me a prescription, he puts me on a diet and he gives me medication. With the passing of time, I become better.

From a spiritual perspective, the doctor is the Guru. Only a light can shed light. The guru gives a prescription: O son, o daughter, you need to have more faith. It is quite rightly said that our effort will take us to the foot of the mountain but our faith makes us climb it.

Then he put us on a diet. From the Guru’s perspective, it is a diet of detachment. We live in a world of attachment. What causes us unease and brings disease? It is the attachment we have to material things, that are not permanent, lasting or truthful. A sense of detachment is necessary. Hold on to what is real.

Then the doctor will say purchase a certain drug. Guruji will say, use the drug of devotion and develop your spirituality. It is quite rightly said that spirituality is not the right of the rich but the privilege of the poor. It is the choice of the wise person.

And then, Raam kripaa, the grace of God; there are several critical factors for success: self effort, self sacrifice, the passing of time and God’s grace. We can never leave God out of the equation. How do we get to Raam kripaa? Through Raam seva, through selfless, ceaseless service to humanity. When we serve man, we’re actually serving the cause of divinity.
