From New Year’s satsang with Paramacharya of SWAHA, H.H. Pt. Hardeo Persad
As we greet each other with “Happy New Year”, it is vital to reflect on the deep meaning of true happiness. It is found not in the fleeting joys of life or the absence of sorrow but in cultivating equanimity—a state of mind unaffected by external circumstances. This equanimity of mind is the essence of spiritual growth.
From Plurality to Non-Duality: Understanding Our Journey
We begin the spiritual journey rooted in plurality, perceiving ourselves, others and God as separate entities. As we progress, we transition to duality, recognising God as distinct yet connected to us. The ultimate goal, however, is to realise non-duality—“Aham Brahmasmi” (I am Divinity). Even if this realisation spans lifetimes, it remains the ideal objective.
Material possessions, power and fame are transient. The only enduring treasure is the spiritual progress and experiences we carry beyond death. Life is a gradual journey of aligning ourselves with our divine identity. Each individual progresses at their own pace, much like students in a classroom. While the world offers joy, it also brings pain and discomfort. To navigate it, equanimity is essential—to remain steady in the face of both fortune and adversity.
The Power of Self-Effort
The Bhagavad Gita emphasises self-effort: “One should lift oneself by one’s own efforts and should not degrade oneself.” Self-effort is transformational, superseding even destiny. Guru Vashisht highlighted its importance in his teachings to Shree Raam, and the Devi Bhagwat also recounts a debate between Lord Indra and Guru Brihaspati on this topic. While destiny shapes circumstances, self-effort determines how we respond and move forward in life.
As humans, we possess the unique potential to face and overcome challenges. Yet, ignorance often leads us to self-doubt and underestimation of our divine nature. We must believe in our inherent abilities, lifting ourselves through self-effort rather than succumbing to the lower self, which is dominated by the mind, senses and physical body. True valour and heroism lies in conquering the lower nature and awakening the higher self.
Self-Mastery: The Path to Internal Peace
Bhagavan Shri Krishna teaches: “One’s own self is one’s friend, and one’s own self is one’s enemy.” We are our greatest allies or obstacles. By controlling the lower self and aligning with the higher self, we can achieve peace and fulfilment. Like Durga Maa, we must harness the tiger and transcend the base instincts through spiritual practices, such as mantra jaap and surrender to God.
Life comprises four dimensions—physical, social, spiritual and mental. Balanced effort in each sphere is essential. While unconditional surrender to God is the ultimate path, it requires profound dedication. For most, self-effort remains the practical and accessible means of spiritual advancement.
The Year 2025
The year 2025 carries the numerological vibration of 9, symbolising Devi and the nine principles: space, time, causation, the three modes of existence (sattva, rajas, tamas), and the cycles of creation, sustenance and dissolution. These principles invite us to align with the divine order of the universe in our personal lives in the year ahead.
Additionally, 2025 is an 11 year, associated with Bhagavan Shiva and the virtue of detachment (vairaagya). Detachment requires letting go of negative habits, emotions and attachments that hinder progress. By releasing anger, hate, revenge and other negativities, we can move forward with clarity and purpose. Introspection can transform our lives, as we make our self-efforts our offerings to God.
Begin Anew with Faith and Effort
As we step into the new year, let us uncover the divine power within, believe in our potential and dedicate our efforts to self-improvement and spiritual growth. With focused energy and determination, we can rise above challenges, align with the higher self and offer our best selves to God and the world.
