As the auspicious occasion of Gayatri Jayanti is observed on August 30th, 2023, we celebrate and reflect upon the deep significance of this sacred day. Gayatri Jayanti holds a profound place in the hearts of Hindus, as it is an opportunity to honour and connect with Gayatri Devi, the Divine Mother. Let us delve into the essence of Gayatri Devi, the power of the Gayatri mantra and the transformative potential it holds for spiritual seekers.
The Divine Nature of Gayatri Devi
While the Gayatri mantra is widely known, knowledge about Gayatri Devi herself is not as widespread. Described in the Devi Bhagwat, Gayatri Devi embodies the qualities of existence, intelligence and bliss. She is known by various names, including Veda Maataa (Mother of the Vedas), Agni Mukha (the burning power of fire), Saraswati (Goddess of Knowledge), Prithivi (Goddess of Earth) and Amrita (Giver of Amrit, the nectar of immortality).
Gayatri Devi is depicted as wearing red clothes and holding the Rig Veda, engaged in the study of this sacred text. She sits on a swan, with her four feet symbolising the four Vedas. Represented as the controller of the eight directions, she is associated with grammar, learning, imagination, understanding, horoscope, history and knowledge of God as taught by the Guru. Vishnu Bhagwan is her conscience, Agni Devta her power of fulfilling yagyas (rituals) and Rudraji her guiding power of intellect.
The Gayatri Mantra: A Gateway to Enlightenment
The Gayatri mantra, also known as the Savitri mantra, originates from the Rig Veda (3.62.10) and is dedicated to the Sun. The name “Gayatri” means “she who protects”, signifying Gayatri Devi’s role as the Divine Mother. The mantra is considered one of the oldest and most powerful mantras, often referred to as “the Mother of the Vedas”. In the Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna declares, “Among all the mantras, I am the Gayatri.”
Composed in the Gayatri metre, the mantra consists of 24 syllables divided into three lines of eight syllables each. The first two lines glorify the manifestation of light, representing the earthly, astral and heavenly realms. The third line is a plea for inner illumination, seeking spiritual ascension and divine wisdom.
The Transformative Power of Gayatri Mantra
Chanting the Gayatri mantra combines the power of mantra and the essence of prayer. The carefully selected words not only convey meaning but also evoke enlightenment. Through repeated and proper recitation, one can access the intrinsic power of the mantra and gain a deep understanding of its significance.
Regular chanting of the Gayatri mantra is believed to bestow tremendous benefits, heightening intelligence, intuition and awareness. It is ideal to chant the mantra at dawn, midday and dusk, known as the three sandhyas. These moments offer excellent opportunities to honour the sun, the source of all life.
The Gayatri Mantra:
Om Bhur Bhuvah Svah,
Tat Savitur Varenyam.
Bhargo Devasya Dhimahi.
Dhiyo Yonah Prachodayaat.
Translation:
We meditate upon the effulgence of that adorable Supreme Divinity, the source of Truth, Consciousness and Bliss.
May that Supreme Radiance be embodied within us, enlightening our intellect and inspiring us to realise the Supreme Truth.
As we celebrate Gayatri Jayanti, let us embrace the profound teachings and blessings of Gayatri Devi and the Gayatri mantra. By connecting with the Divine Mother’s essence and reciting the powerful mantra, we can awaken the divine consciousness within ourselves, gaining wisdom, clarity and spiritual growth. May the Gayatri mantra illuminate our paths, leading us towards enlightenment and the realisation of the Supreme Truth.
