Vasant Ramnarine, Member, Swaha International
My Name is Vasant Ramnarine and I am 18 years old. I attended St. Mary’s College. I have been an active member of SWAHA International since birth. I am a musician and have been playing the tabla for over ten years. I will be pursuing my passion in aviation studies abroad as of the next academic school year. In November 2019, I was awarded a National Open Scholarship in the Mathematics category by the Government of Trinidad and Tobago.
The road to my achievements had many bumps and challenges. However, I was able to overcome them as a result of my determination and perseverance in following a systematic and simple lifestyle that incorporated academics, extracurricular activities and, most importantly, spirituality.
I found that the success I achieved was largely due to the support I received on all sides. I always had the constant, unwavering support of my parents, Bobby and Neela Ramnarine, and grandparents who stood by my side throughout my journey. As a child I grew up attending temple regularly thanks to the guidance of my parents who kept me on the right track and developed my values and belief system. My Guru, Pundit Dr. Umesh Persad was also instrumental in guiding me to make decisions that led me on my path. My teachers at both primary and secondary school as well as at lessons aided me tremendously along the way.
The key to success really is proper time management and practising a balanced lifestyle. Being a young Hindu, temple activities and religious events played an integral role in my life. I also volunteered at The Reptile Conservation Centre of Trinidad and Tobago as well as at the Sixth Formers Association Services (SFAS) where I taught children during the July-August vacation. These activities along with academic studies allowed for a balanced lifestyle which was my key to success.
As a young person I was blessed to have these many factors that contributed to my development but without applying myself and putting in the effort I would not have been able to traverse the road to success. I will conclude with this quote that indicates the importance of self-effort.
“You may never know what results come of your actions, but if you do nothing, there will be no results.” Mahatma Gandhi
