When Shri Raam was coronated as King of Ayodha, he ruled as an ideal king should. The entire kingdom experienced a state of perfect peace.
Tulsidas went to great lengths to explain various facets of the utopian state that the citizenry enjoyed. The ‘Ayodhya’ within each individual yearns for the presence of Shri Raam who represents spirituality. When that coronation takes place within, building ‘Raam Raajya’ would be a very simple task.
Outlined below are a few examples which Shri Tulsidas penned describing life in Ayodha under Shri Raam’s reign. These are useful building-materials for the construction of our own Raam Raajya.
- No one felt enmity towards one another.
- Everyone was devoted to duty.
- Everyone enjoyed happiness. There was no fear, sorrow or illness.
- Everyone lived according to scriptural injunctions.
- Righteousness with its four pillars (truth, purity, compassion, and charity) reigned everywhere.
- Everyone was devoted to God.
- Everyone was healthy; no one was ill.
- No one was destitute or miserable.
- Everyone was learned and wise.
- Everyone recognised the merits of others.
- Everyone was grateful to kindnesses extended to them.
- Everyone was generous and devoted to the feet of Brahmins.
- Every husband was pledged to a vow of monogamy and each wife was devoted to her husband in thought, word and deed.
- The word ‘conquer’ was heard only with reference to the mind.
- In every home the Holy Scriptures were read regularly.
- In every house was a beautiful and well-furnished picture-gallery with wonderful pictures depicting the story of Shri-Raam’s leelas.
- Everyone had a garden with beautiful flowers and the fragrant ‘tulsi’ plants
- In every household, songs and music praising the lord filled the atmosphere.
- There was no room for envy, pride, infatuation and arrogance.
- Everyone’s heart was filled with happiness, good understanding, contentment, dispassion and discernment.
Indeed, if each of us imbibes these characteristics of ‘Raam Raajya’, our home, our bodies and environment would be like Ayodha and we would experience perfect peace, unbounded joy, success and stability. Let’s begin the construction now!
